The Port of Oakland was established in 1927 when the Board of Port Commissioners was organized to operate the Oakland Seaport and the newly built Oakland Municipal Airport. As a state tidelands trust, the port was created to serve the region's maritime commerce and support regional economic development. The port operates as an independent city department governed by a Board of Port Commissioners and functions as a self-funded entity managed at 530 Water Street in downtown Oakland.

Today the Port operates more than 875 acres of waterfront property and manages one of the busiest container terminals in North America. Container ships arrive regularly at the Oakland Seaport to load and unload cargo from Asia, Europe, and domestic markets. The Port also operates Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport for regional aviation, manages commercial real estate including the Jack London Square waterfront development, and runs a public power utility serving port-owned properties. The port complex supports thousands of longshoremen, truck drivers, warehouse workers and office staff whose livelihoods depend on steady shipping traffic.

Families with a wage earner in the port industries—dockworkers, truck drivers, warehouse staff, or administrative roles—rely on a steady income that can be disrupted by shifts in shipping volumes, health issues, or other unexpected events. Life insurance protects those income streams and the households that depend on them. Families with port-dependent income often choose coverage sized to bridge the gap until children are independent or a business reaches stability, making term coverage a natural fit for their circumstances.
